Getting out of debt
59Getting out of Debt
Getting out of debt is not as easy as it may sound, and yet it’s not as difficult as it may sound either. A lot of people, and I’ve seen it with my own eyes, are completely debt ridden and yet they don’t change the habits that got them into that situation in the first place. This is only going to lead to more trouble.
One of the things that you have to do, and yes this is hard if you are already in debt, is you have to put your credit cards away. This might mean some tough changes such as not going out for expensive coffees, actually, not even going out for cheap coffees, not going out for lunch with your friends and fellow workers, and cutting back on some of the choices you make at home.
However, let’s take a look at some of the immediate actions you can take that don’t involve changing your habits. After all, changing habits is very very difficult. One of the things that you can do, and this actually is a pleasant side effect of de-cluttering your house and your life, what you can do is you can start taking a look around at the things you have that you no longer use, you no longer need, or the just plain that you don’t like and sell them.
Yes, you can sell some of your belongings. This doesn’t seem like an easy thing to do, however, I have seen people sell off a lot of their smaller items on E-Bay, or even Craigslist. Or if you want, you can simply put up a little notice in your community; maybe the store or often in different businesses or public places that have bulletin boards. You can always have a yard sale.
What this does is of course bring in a few dollars and gets rid of a lot of clutter in your house. But, this does something ever more important and it breaks your attachment to your belongings, to material things, and it sets your mind toward the notion of getting out of debt.
While you’re taking a look at your belongings, you can also stop and recollect why you bought these things in the first place. At the same time, tuck away your credit cards. Just put them in the drawer or take them out of your purse or your wallet and put them in a drawer. That way, you haven’t really separated from them, but if you’re at the store and you see something, the impulse is not as easy to meet if you don’t have your credit cards with you.
What happens next depends how badly in debt you are, and how far you have to go in getting out of debt. If you are completely overwhelmed, there are companies that will help you talk to your creditors. One of the ways that a credit counseling program can help is that they will work with your creditors by consolidating all your credit debt into one payment, which you then make to the credit counseling company which then doles it out to your creditors for you.
There’s also debt settlement, and what happens here is a representative of the debt settlement plan can get in touch with your creditors and see if they can make an arrangement to pay off your debt, perhaps 50 cents on the dollar. Of course, this will affect your credit score, but it’s better to know the reality of the situation, which is that your credit score is probably already suffering if you’re dealing with a lot of payments. The good news is this helps you avoid bankruptcy.
